A child prodigy turned Hollywood legend, he composed iconic film scores, including the swashbuckling adventures of Errol Flynn, and is revered for his lush, romantic music.
Erich Wolfgang Korngold, a prodigious Austrian composer and conductor, revolutionized the film music industry, earning him the title of one of the most influential composers in Hollywood history. With a repertoire spanning classical music, operas, and film scores, Korngold left an indelible mark on the world of music.
Born on May 29, 1897, in Vienna, Austria, Korngold's musical genius emerged at a tender age. At just 11 years old, his ballet, Der Schneemann (The Snowman), took Vienna by storm, solidifying his position as a wunderkind. Two years later, his Second Piano Sonata, performed by renowned pianist Artur Schnabel, catapulted him to international acclaim.
In 1916, Korngold's one-act operas, and Der Ring des Polykrates, premiered in Munich, conducted by the esteemed Bruno Walter. His opera, Die tote Stadt (The Dead City), debuted in Hamburg and Cologne in 1920, further cementing his reputation as a master composer. By 1921, he was conducting the Hamburg Opera, demonstrating his versatility as a conductor.
In 1934, Korngold responded to Max Reinhardt's invitation to compose music for films in Hollywood, fleeing the rising Nazi regime in Europe. His first film score, A Midsummer Night's Dream, marked the beginning of a new chapter in his career. The 1935 swashbuckler, Captain Blood, launched Errol Flynn's career, with Korngold's score playing a pivotal role in the film's success.
Korngold's Oscar-winning scores for Anthony Adverse (1936) and The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) solidified his position as a pioneer in film music. He went on to compose scores for 16 Hollywood films, receiving two additional Academy Award nominations. Alongside Max Steiner and Alfred Newman, Korngold is revered as one of the founders of film music.
Although Korngold's late classical Romantic compositions had fallen out of favor by the time of his death in 1957, his music experienced a remarkable resurgence of interest in the 1970s. The release of the RCA Red Seal album, The Sea Hawk: The Classic Film Scores of Erich Wolfgang Korngold, sparked a renewed appreciation for his works, cementing his legacy as a master composer.
Korngold became a professor of music at the Vienna State Academy in 1931. He adopted U.S. nationality in 1943, remaining a proud American until his passing.
Did you know that Korngold's father, Julius Korngold, was a renowned music critic and his mother, Josefine Korngold, was an accomplished pianist?
Korngold's love for Johann Strauss II's operettas led him to reorchestrate and rearrange several of the composer's works in the 1920s.
Korngold's film scores have been reused and re-recorded numerous times, demonstrating their timeless appeal and enduring popularity.
