Virginia Bottomley is a British Conservative Party politician and headhunter, renowned for her extensive career in public service, which spanned over two decades. She is best known for being a Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons from 1984 to 2005 and later becoming a member of the House of Lords in 2005.
Born on March 12, 1948, in Dunoon, Scotland, Virginia Hilda Brunette Maxwell Garnett was raised in a family steeped in politics and education. Her mother, Barbara Rutherford-Smith, was a teacher and elected Conservative member of the Inner London Education Authority, while her father, W. John Garnett CBE, was a director of what was then called The Industrial Society.
After completing her education at Putney High School in southwest London, Bottomley went on to study sociology at the University of Essex, graduating with a BA degree. She later earned a Master of Arts degree from the London School of Economics.
Before entering politics, Bottomley worked as a social scientist, researcher for the Child Poverty Action Group, social worker, and magistrate (Justice of the Peace). She also served as the Chairman of the Inner London Juvenile Court.
In 1984, she was elected to Parliament in a byelection, filling the seat left vacant by the death of Maurice Macmillan, son of former prime minister Harold Macmillan. She represented the constituency of South West Surrey and went on to hold various ministerial positions, including Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Department of the Environment in 1988.
