Jamali embarked on his political journey in 1970, joining the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). He actively participated in the politics of Balochistan under military governor Rahimuddin Khan during the 1970s. He held the position of Chief Minister of Balochistan for two non-consecutive terms from June to December 1988 and November 1996 to February 1997.
