A prominent portrait painter of European aristocracy, capturing the essence of 17th- and 18th-century British high society with his elegant and refined brushstrokes.
Sir Godfrey Kneller, a renowned German-British painter, is remembered as the leading portraitist in England during the late Stuart and early Georgian eras. With his exceptional skill and innovative style, he served as court painter to successive English and British monarchs, including Charles II of England and George I of Great Britain.
Kneller was born Gottfried Kniller on August 8, 1646, in the Free City of Lübeck, Germany, to Zacharias Kniller, a portrait painter. He studied in Leiden and later became a pupil of Ferdinand Bol and Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn in Amsterdam. This exposure to the Masters of Light and Shadow had a profound impact on Kneller's artistic development.
In 1676, Kneller arrived in England, where he quickly earned the patronage of the Duke of Monmouth. This led to his introduction to Charles II, whom he painted in 1678.
After Sir Peter Lely's death in 1680, Kneller was jointly appointed Principal Painter in Ordinary to the King, a position he held until his death.
He painted a series of eight Hampton Court Beauties, commissioned by William III, to match a similar series of Charles I's Windsor Beauties painted by Lely.
Kneller's innovative approach to portraiture involved creating brief sketches of his subjects' faces and then adding details to a formulaic model. This technique enabled him to produce portraits on an industrial scale, catering to the fashion of gentlemen wearing full wigs.
Kneller's portraits set a pattern that was followed until the emergence of William Hogarth and Joshua Reynolds. His influence on British portraiture extended beyond his own lifetime, shaping the course of English art.
