Kanshi Ram, fondly known as Bahujan Nayak or Manyavar, was a renowned Indian politician and social reformer who dedicated his life to the upliftment and political mobilization of the Bahujans, comprising backward or lower caste people, including untouchable groups at the bottom of India's rigid caste system. He is best known for founding the Dalit Shoshit Samaj Sangharsh Samiti (DS4), the All India Backwards SCSTOBC and Minorities Communities Employees Federation (BAMCEF), and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which paved the way for a more inclusive and equal society.
Kanshi Ram was born on March 15, 1934, in Ropar district, Punjab, British India, to a Ramdasia family of Chamar caste. He completed his education at various local schools and later graduated with a BSc degree from Government College Ropar in 1956. Ram's experiences with caste discrimination during his early life, particularly while working at the Explosive Research and Development Laboratory in Pune, played a significant role in shaping his future activism.
After reading B.R. Ambedkar's book, "Annihilation of Caste," Ram became deeply inspired by his philosophy and was further motivated by witnessing the discrimination against a Dalit employee who wished to observe a holiday celebrating Ambedkar's birth. This sparked a sense of determination within him to fight against social injustices and work towards the empowerment of marginalized communities.
In 1971, Ram founded the All India SC, ST, OBC, and Minority Employees Association, which later transformed into BAMCEF in 1978. BAMCEF aimed to mobilize educated members of the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backwards Classes, and Minorities to support Ambedkarite principles. Later, in 1984, Ram founded the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which became a powerful platform for the political empowerment of the Bahujan community.
Throughout his life, Kanshi Ram firmly believed in the principles of social justice, equality, and human rights. He advocated for the annihilation of the caste system, promoting a more inclusive and equal society. His philosophy was deeply rooted in the teachings of B.R.
