Born on April 4, 1826, in Jehay-Bodegne, Gramme was the sixth child of Mathieu-Joseph Gramme. Despite being poorly educated and semi-literate throughout his life, Gramme's talent lay in handicraft. He became a joiner after leaving school and later moved to Paris, where he took a job as a model maker at a company that manufactured electrical equipment.
While working in Paris, Gramme became interested in technology and began experimenting with electrical devices. In association with Hippolyte Fontaine, he built an improved dynamo, which they showcased at the Vienna exhibition in 1873. The Gramme machine was a game-changer, capable of generating higher voltages than any other dynamo of its time.
Gramme's invention earned him numerous awards and recognition. In 1877, he was made an officer of the National Order of the Legion of Honour. He was also awarded the last of the valuable Volta Prizes by the French government in 1888.
In 1873, Gramme and Fontaine discovered that the Gramme machine was reversible and would spin when connected to any DC power supply. This accidental discovery led to the development of the first usefully powerful electrical motor that was successful industrially.
In 1875, Nikola Tesla observed a Gramme machine at the Graz University of Technology. Tesla was inspired by the Gramme machine and conceived the idea of using it for alternating current, although he was unable to develop the idea at that time.
In 1857, Gramme married Hortense Nysten, a widow and mother of a daughter, Hlose. Hortense died in 1890, and Gramme remarried in 1891.
