The day that will live in infamy! Imperial Japan's surprise attack on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, was a masterclass in stealth and deception. Under the cover of darkness, Japanese aircraft carriers crept within striking distance, launching 353 fighters, bombers, and torpedo planes at dawn. The unsuspecting US Pacific Fleet and defending air forces were caught off guard, with four US battleships sunk, three damaged, and hundreds of aircraft destroyed or damaged. The Americans suffered 2,403 casualties, while Japan lost 29 planes, five midget subs, and 64 servicemen. The attack would draw the United States into World War II.
