Born on June 10, 1557, in Bassano del Grappa, Italy, Leandro was the younger brother of Francesco Bassano the Younger and the third son of Jacopo Bassano, a prominent artist in his own right. Growing up in an artistic family, Leandro was trained by his father and brothers in their workshop, where he honed his skills in painting and developed a deep understanding of the artistic traditions of the time.
After his brother Francesco opened a workshop in Venice before 1575, Leandro took over the family studio in Bassano del Grappa. It was during this period that Leandro began to establish himself as a talented artist in his own right, creating works that showcased his unique style and attention to detail. By around 1575, Leandro had become an important assistant to his father, and his father wanted him to carry on the studio in Bassano del Grappa.
Following his father's death and his brother's untimely suicide, Leandro moved to Venice, taking over the family studio there. It was in Venice that Leandro's talent as a portrait painter truly flourished, as he developed a style that was deeply influenced by the Venetian masters, particularly Tintoretto. His portraits, characterized by fine brushwork, cool, light colors, and well-defined areas, earned him widespread recognition and acclaim.
In 1595, Leandro's talent and contributions to the world of art were recognized by the Doge of Venice, Marino Grimani, who awarded him a knighthood. This prestigious honor marked a turning point in Leandro's career, and he began to sign his name with the honorary title, Eques.
