In the 1970s, Remek married his first wife, Czech actress Hana Davidov, and had a daughter, Anna, in 1980. He later married his second wife, Jana, and had another daughter. From 1972 to 1976, Remek studied at the Gagarin Air Force Academy in Russia, where he prepared for his space mission.
In 1978, Remek became the first Czechoslovak in space, flying aboard Soyuz 28 with Soviet cosmonaut Aleksei Gubarev. During his time in space, Remek conducted scientific experiments and tested equipment for future space missions.
