Born on June 9, 1916, in Rckelwitz, near Kamenz, Brzan grew up in a humble household where his father worked as a quarry worker and smallholder. He was the oldest of four siblings, and his younger sisters' insatiable appetite for stories inspired him to develop his narrative talents from a young age. This early spark would eventually ignite a prolific writing career.

Education and Early Activism

Brzan attended school in Bautzen and later studied political economics. However, his academic pursuits were disrupted in 1936 when he was excluded from his studies. During this tumultuous period, he became involved with Domowina, an organization that promoted Sorbian culture and language. Brzan's activism didn't go unnoticed, and he was eventually forced to emigrate to Prague in 1937. Following his return, he was arrested and imprisoned from 1938 to 1939.
