Father Gapon, a charismatic Russian Orthodox priest, led a peaceful procession of over 100,000 workers, many carrying icons and portraits of Tsar Nicholas II, to the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg. They sought to deliver a petition to the Tsar, calling for better working conditions, higher wages, and civil liberties. But when they reached the palace, Imperial Guards, misled by false rumors of a revolutionary plot, opened fire on the crowd, killing over 100 and wounding many more. The event, known as Bloody Sunday, sparked outrage and widespread protests, marking the beginning of the 1905 Russian Revolution.
